IFMA Hong Kong Chapter President's Message

It is my great honour to have been elected by the members of the Hong Kong Chapter of International Facility Management Association (IFMA) as President for the 2020/2021 session.

Facility management is a complex and dynamic profession. Facility managers are expected to have a wide knowledge base in order to ensure the functionality, comfort, safety, and efficiency of the built environment by integrating people, place, process, and technology. I have been immersed in asset, property, and facility management in Hong Kong, Macau, and China for more than 30 years – and I have never had the same day twice!

Facility managers are also at the forefront of change. As we currently face the COVID-19 pandemic, we are here to support you through this demanding time by providing resources such as webinar series, pandemic manuals, and strategic frameworks; you can find all of these at our Coronavirus Preparedness Resource Centre at www.ifma.org and www.ifma.org.hk.

As you may be aware, the Property Management Licensing Regime was implemented on 1 August 2020. This signifies a general recognition of the importance of property management services in our society. We are very glad that the Hong Kong Chapter of IFMA has been named as a Recognized Professional Body by Property Management Services Authority (PMSA). Certified Facility Managers® (CFM®) who are also Professional Members, Associate Members, or Young Professional Members of the IFMA Hong Kong Chapter meet the criteria for the professional qualification requirements of a Property Management Practitioner (PMP) Tier 1 license offered by PMSA. We have scheduled two briefing sessions by the PMSA on the Licensing Regime in October; you are very welcome to enrol.

Our highly-praised signature conference – the Integrate Facility Management Conference – will be held as a virtual event this 17th November. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Changing the FM Conversation – Sustainability and Technology’. We will explore the challenges and opportunities that impact the FM sector today – from the roles that technology and data play in driving efficiency and sustainability, to the policies and business trends that are reforming our industry and the ways our buildings are used. This event is supported by PASS funding, and registration will be available soon – stay tuned!

This year we will focus on the following areas:

  • Industry professionalism – in line with the Government’s policies, providing support to members’ applications for Property Management Company Licences and Property Management Practitioner Licences by organizing various briefing sessions with PMSA.
  • Raising the bar for the Industry – recognizing and promoting excellence and quality facility management projects by awarding the IFMA Asia Pacific Awards of Excellence.
  • Enhancing your professional development – bringing you the best of the latest technologies, trends, and research in the field via professional development events.
  • Expanding your network – creating networking opportunities to expand your business networking and strengthen your professional relationships with FMs in your geographic region.
  • Advancing your FM career – organizing membership and credential information sessions and training to support your preparation for earning a globally-recognized IFMA credential.
  • Nurturing future FM leaders – cultivating a nurturing environment to empower our energetic and talented young professionals to display and push their talents forward.

Finally, I wish to take this opportunity to thank our 18 corporate partners for their support. We certainly look forward to continuing collaboration in the years to come.

Cheers – and stay safe!

Kendrew Leung
President, The Hong Kong Chapter of IFMA
