UNLOCKING THE TREASURE HIDDEN IN YOUR ELECTRICITY METERS(12 June, Tue 14:00 - 14:30)
By MR. ROBERT ALLENDER,
Director, Energy Resources
Management, Hong Kong

Too many buildings in Asia are run without the owners and operators knowing anything more about their huge electricity costs than what appears on the monthly bill. Building staff may go to the meters once a day and handwrite the meter reading onto a manual log sheet. This reading may even get entered onto an Excel spreadsheet. But in reality none of these levels of management are anywhere near sufficient, given the size of the expenditure involved. Electricity companies track each of their commercial customers’ consumption in intervals not of one month or one day, but in intervals of 30 minutes or less. The party consuming this electricity, and paying for it, should do nothing less. This presentation will bring an understanding of the value of collecting, analysing, and using buildings’ electricity consumption data in 30-minute intervals, and will describe various ways by which interval data can be acquired, filtered, structured, and charted.

OBJECTIVES

• Appreciate the value of 30-minute interval data.
• Make informed decisions about interval data aquisition.
• Understand some of the ways by which analysing interval data leads to lower electricity bills.

Mr. Robert Allender founded Energy Resources Management in 1992. In the intervening 15 years ERM’s clients have saved millions of dollars in previously wasted energy expense. Under his leadership, ERM has provided services such as full outsourcing of clients’ entire energy management function, creation and implementation of energy management policies and plans, plant and systems value reviews, and investment-grade energy audits on millions of square feet of commercial space throughout Asia. Robert is a graduate of Cornell University, and was the fi rst person in Asia to receive Certifi ed Energy Manager accreditation from the
Association of Energy Engineers.

BUILDING INTEGRATED PHOTO VOLTAICS (BIPV) (13 June, Wed 14:00 - 14:30)
By MR. STEFAN HOTZ,
International Accounts
Director, Sarnafil Waterproofi ng Systems (Shanghai) Limited, China

Several years ago one of the worst utility power meltdowns in history hit the west coast of the USA. Electrical blackouts, brownouts and record energy bills caused by flawed utility industry deregulations made business difficult for companies throughout the country. Since then, many businesses have begun to see that energy efficiency is a necessity. Some companies have long been committed to protecting the environment and conserving natural resources - and have reaped the financial benefits of those actions. Some have established their own ‘Green’ teams, a group of individuals dedicated to fi nding ways to help save money by saving energy and other resources. One of the solutions is to use the area of a flat roof and build in lightweight flexible photo voltaic modules to create an ‘inhouse’ power station fed by solar power. The presentation will address this opportunity in more detail through case studies and illustrate how it can be adapted in Asian markets.

OBJECTIVES

• Know what could be done to save energy.
• Realise that Liability could be turned into an Asset.

Mr. Stefan Hotz is the Shanghai-based International Accounts Director with Sarnafil Waterproofi ng Systems. Prior to moving to Shanghai in 2006 he worked in the headquarters of Sarnafil International in Switzerland.

DEMAND RESPONSE PROGRAMMES(12 June, Tue 14:30 - 15:30)
By MR. GLEN E. SMITH,
President, Energy
Curtailment Specialists, USA

Energy Curtailment Specialists (ECS) is the largest demand response provider in the world and works with many IFMA members including the New York Post in order to help them reduce electricity and help maintain grid stability through demand response programmes. Demand response programmes represent one of
the only opportunities a facility has to physically be paid for how it uses electricity as opposed to the other way around. This presentation will look at the current state of electricity grids and demand response programmes worldwide and examine how to perform a demand response audit, as well as answer the big question as
to why a facility should seriously consider participating in a demand response programme.

OBJECTIVES

• Understand Electric Grids
• Understand Demand Response Programmes
• Understand why they need to become involved

Mr. Glen Smith is President, CEO and cofounder of ECS. He has been involved in the energy arena since the beginning of electricityderegulation several years ago. After practicing law for several years, Mr Smith initially began in the energy fi eld by working for several years at a large New York State ESCo (energy supply company), ultimately becoming a vice president of the company. His multiple responsibilities included purchasing electricity supply aroundthe- clock, by the hour, from multiple and bilateral electricity supply sources including NYISO and PJM Interconnection. At ECS, Mr Smith maintains general oversight and oversees company operations including programme administration and interaction with customers and NYISO. He holds degrees in Political Science, International Economics & Business Administration, and a Juris Doctorate.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY FOR FACILITIES MANAGERS(13 June, Wed 14:30 - 15:30)
By MR. JOHN RICHARDSON,
Regional Director, Energy
Services, Honeywell,
Asia Pacific

Energy could take up to 75 per cent of an annual operating budget. Are you using your energy resources as effi ciently as you should? Energy scarcity is a real issue, not just globally but very much close to home. Hong Kong is a major consumer of energy. Most of the consumption can be attributed to the commercial and public
sectors but when it comes to actual planning and budgeting, energy concerns are usually very low in the list of priorities. Energy effi ciency is one area where a small change can make a huge impact on savings. Through different programmes and models, each business can make the best use of its facilities to yield actual year-on-year savings. This presentation will showcase the options for energy effi ciency, examine practical measures to achieve cost saving targets and look at case studies from overseas to examine how they can be applied locally.

OBJECTIVES

• Understand their options for energy effi ciency
• Realize practical measures to achieve cost saving targets
• Relate to different case studies from abroad and how it can apply to them

Mr. John Richardson, Director Performance Contracting Asia-Pacific, works with Honeywell offices throughout the Asia-Pacific region to bring awareness of Honeywell Energy Services to clients in the region. With more than 25 years of work experience in the global energy services field, including more than five years working with clients in Asia Pacific, he brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and practical understanding of the energy business to help clients work through their energy requirements and plans. John holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from North Carolina A & T State University.
